PROVINCE PARTNERS WITH CANADIAN TIRE JUMPSTART

PROVINCE PARTNERS WITH CANADIAN TIRE JUMPSTART MAKING SPORT AND RECREATION MORE ACCESSIBLE TO ISLAND YOUTH

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI -- Recognizing that sports and physical activity can change and improve the lives of Island youth, the Province of Prince Edward Island is pleased to partner with Canadian Tire Jumpstart to increase access to sport and recreation programs across the province, says Health and Wellness Minister Carolyn Bertram.

“We want to ensure that every Islander has the opportunity to participate in active play, sports and recreation,” said Minister Bertram. “The goal of our investment is to build a life-long interest in physical activity, sport and wellness for our Island youth.” The Department of Health and Wellness is providing $20,000 to Canadian Tire Jumpstart, which will benefit hundreds of youth across the province. Canadian Tire Jumpstart provides increased access to sport and recreation programs for children, youth and families. The program works with local provincial sport and recreation organizations and provides funding to assist with registration fees and/or equipment. The program emphasizes healthy, active living and teaches skills that can be used both on and off the playing field. “We have been equipping the PEI community with their sporting goods needs for years and are thrilled this initiative will now provide more children the opportunity to play,” says Glenn Puchniak, Summerside Canadian Tire Store dealer. “Since 2005, we have allocated more than $300,000 and helped over 2,500 kids. This generous donation will help us continue our great work.” This initiative provides opportunities for young people to get involved in organized sport, as well as recreation programs such as skateboarding, music lessons, martial arts or dance. Canadian Tire Jumpstart is a national, charitable program that helps kids aged four to 18 with financial needs to participate in organized sports and recreation. The program helps cover the cost of registration, equipment and/or transportation. For more information on the program, visit their website at www.canadiantire.ca/jumpstart.
