2021 Arena Safety Walkabouts

Recreation PEI will be hosting a series of Arena Safety Walkabouts in the coming weeks. These sessions will be hosted at two Ammonia and two Freon rinks/arenas throughout the province. The Walkabouts will be led by Steven Townsend, PEI Chief Boiler Inspector and Wilma Ramsay, Occupational Health & Safety Officer at the Workers Compensation Board of PEI.

These informal sessions will give arena operators and managers the opportunity to openly discuss various safety measures and procedures within an arena setting, such as air quality control and refrigeration safety, with these professionals and other arena operators from other rinks/arenas across the province.

The Walkabouts will include a brief walkabout outside the facility, inside the arena, inside the mechanical room, around the ice resurfacer, and possibly in other areas of the facility such as the canteen and chemical storage rooms.

We encourage at least one staff member from each rink/arena across the province to attend. These sessions are for all arena operators from new staff to more experienced staff as it will be a chance to share knowledge with each other.

Pre-registration is required. If you have more than one person attending please fill out a separate form for each attendee. Masks will be mandatory and social distancing will be enforced when possible.

Walkabouts will be held:
February 4th – 9:00am – Evangeline Recreation Centre (Ammonia)
February 4th – 1:30pm – Gateway Arena (Freon)
February 11th – 9:00am – Three Rivers Sportsplex (Freon)
February 11th – 1:30pm – Cody Banks Arena (Ammonia)

Attendees may select the session that works best for them, but should select one of the arena’s that match the type (ammonia/freon) of their own rink/arena refrigeration plant.

These sessions are in lieu of the Mid-Season Ice Maintenance course this year as the Maritime Arena Operators Institute courses are being revised with new content for 2021.
